What is pressure drop in a heat exchanger?

Pressure drop is the difference in pressure between the inlet and outlet of a heat exchanger. This occurs because the fluid encounters resistance as it flows through channels, plates or tubes.

A higher pressure drop often means more intensive heat transfer, but also a higher energy requirement for pumps or fans. That is why pressure drop is an important design criterion in any heat exchanger calculation.
