Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers (GPHE)

Gasketed plate heat exchangers (GPHEs, Plate and Frame) are compact and efficient thermal devices that are widely used in sectors such as HVAC, the food industry, the pharmaceutical industry, chemical production and maritime systems. They consist of a series of corrugated metal plates mounted within a frame, with elastomeric gaskets sealing the spaces between the plates and guiding alternating hot and cold fluid flows. The corrugated plate geometry promotes turbulence, even at relatively low flow rates, thereby significantly improving heat transfer and minimising fouling.

A key advantage of GPHEs is their modular design. Plates can be added or removed to accommodate changing thermal capacity requirements, making it easy to adapt the units to process expansions or optimisations. Thanks to their compact design and high ratio of heat transfer surface area to volume, they deliver performance comparable to much larger tube heat exchangers. Maintenance is also relatively straightforward, as the heat exchanger can be opened for inspection, cleaning or replacement of gaskets without the need for specialised equipment.

The choice of materials is of great importance to the performance and service life of GPHEs. Stainless steel, titanium or alloys such as 254SMO are often used for the plates, depending on the required corrosion resistance. Gasket materials such as NBR, EPDM or VITON are selected on the basis of temperature and chemical compatibility. Despite their advantages, GPHEs are generally limited by the temperature and pressure limits of the gaskets, making them less suitable for extreme operating conditions. Furthermore, gasket ageing and potential leaks require regular maintenance.

In essence, gasketed plate heat exchangers offer a flexible, cost-effective and energy-efficient solution to a wide range of heat transfer challenges.
