Desublimation (deposition): turning gas directly into a solid
Desublimation is a unique separation process in which a gas is cooled until a specific component transition directly into a solid phase, bypassing the liquid state altogether. While less common than technologies such as absorption or adsorption, desublimation can provide highly selective and energy-efficient separation for certain applications, particularly when valuable products need to be recovered from gas streams or when difficult contaminants must be removed.
Desublimation (also called deposition) is the direct phase change from a gas to a solid. This occurs when a gas is cooled below its deposition temperature. A familiar everyday example is the formation of frost on a cold surface, where water vapor in the air turns directly into ice crystals. In industrial applications, desublimators use controlled cooling surfaces or heat exchangers to capture specific compounds from gas streams as solids. These solids can then be collected, recovered, and reused or disposed of as required.
